Recycle.co.uk breaks UK domain name record

The twin desires of businesses to be seen to be both technology savvy and environmentally friendly came together as a UK internet domain name sold for a record £150,000.

The site “recycle.co.uk” was bought by ASAP Ventures, a venture capital company and is the highest ever sale for a .co.uk name. It breaks the previous record paid by J Sainsbury for the site taste.co.uk which was bought for £110,000 in 1997. (more…)

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), which makes policy governing the Internet’s Domain Name System, recently held its 30th International Public Meeting in Los Angeles. ICANN has stumbled into serious controversy as it threatens to establish policies for systematic censorship of generic top-level domains (“gTLDs” such as ‘.com’ or ‘.org’), and it left these issues unresolved as it ended the week with a meeting of the Board of Directors on Friday, November 2nd. Appearing on Google’s 1 – 10 web results is every web administrator’s dream. With Google generating over 85% of all Internet search engine referred traffic, reaching that privileged ranking can differentiate the professional Internet players from the amateur website owners. As a matter of fact, numerous tests have demonstrated that the top three Google results are read by the majority of web surfers, the remaining results on that first page are the second most efficient ones, but only about 10% of Internet users explore beyond the third page of results. Keyword Stuffing

Keyword stuffing is a broad term, but generally speaking, it is using the same keyword many times in a web page to such a degree that it becomes difficult to read the content on the web page. This has been a problem since the first web page was ever created for SEO purposes. To set the record on this, search engines have gotten smart over the years and recognize when this is occurring on a web page. Since this was, and to this day, still being abused, search engines totally ignore the meta-keyword content. So ‘stuffing’ that information in an image or meta tag is totally useless, yet can still get your web site banned because it is obvious to the search engines that you are trying to abuse and manipulate the organic search results.
